ABOUT

May 22, 2013:   SCROLL DOWN FOR THE LATEST POSTS! Thanks for visiting!

About Me: When I became pregnant with my first child, I started becoming much more aware of my body and the environment around it, as didn’t want to expose my unborn child to anything that could potentially harm him. My awareness increased when he was born and I was faced with the decisions of formula or breast milk, to vaccinate or not to vaccinate, and what kinds of cleaning products to use that are kid friendly. I became overwhelmed as I sifted through a ton of information, not knowing what information was coming from a valid source. I was frustrated to not be able to find the information I wanted in an organized and timely fashion; I would spend hours on end trying to get was I was looking for. I also faced the frustration of realizing that there are so many people who are oblivious to the data I was finding. I know that every parent wants what’s best or his/her children, so in my mind it only makes sense that other parents would want to know about the information I was coming across. I mean, if my neighbor only knew what I knew, surely he wouldn’t have his children playing on a lawn covered in the pesticides that he had sprayed only days before. I began to learn that for some people, ignorance is bliss, unaware that this bliss has a time limit. My goal with this site is NOT to preach my beliefs (at least I’ll try not to!), but to provide you with the information to make your own informed choices.

Garden Hoses – A Potential Health Risk

Every summer we fill up the water tables and kiddie pools, turn on the toy sprinkler and let the kids have some water fun out in the backyard, while my husband and I tend to our organic garden. What we didn’t know, until recently, was that we were exposing both our children and our soil to harmful metals and chemicals.

Child Drinking from Garden Hose

Though parents do not often encourage drinking out of the hose, children often suck on water toys or accidentally swallow water when playing with water that comes from a hose.

In 2012, HealthyStuff.org* conducted studies on almost 200 hoses, gloves, kneeling pads and tools. Researchers tested for “lead, cadmium, bromine (associated with brominated flame retardants); chlorine (indicating the presence of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC); phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA). Such chemicals have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, premature births and early puberty in laboratory animals, among other serious health problems.”

FINDINGS on the Garden Hoses, as stated by HealthStuff.org:

  • 100% of the garden hoses sampled for phthalates contained four phthalate plasticizers which are currently banned in children’s products.
  • Two water hoses contained the flame retardant 2,3,4,5-tetrabromo-bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (TBPH).

What Was Found in the Water from the Hoses:

  • Water sampled from one hose contained 0.280 mg/l (ppm) lead. This is 18-times higher than the federal drinking water standard of 0.015 mg/l.
  • BPA levels of 2.3 ppm was found in the hose water. This level is 20-times higher than the 0.100 ppm safe drinking water level used by NSF to verify that consumers are not being exposed to levels of a chemical that exceed regulated levels.
  • The phthalate DEHP was found at 0.025 ppm in the hose water. This level is 4-times higher than federal drinking water standards. EPA and FDA regulate DEHP in water at 0.006 mg/l (ppm).

A Safe Option. Read about and BUY HERE

What to do to Avoid these Chemicals (As shared by HealthyStuff.org):

  • Read the labels: Avoid hoses with a California Prop 65 warning that says “this product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm.” Buy hoses that are “drinking water safe” and “lead-free.”
  • Let it run: Always let your hose run for a few seconds before using, since the water that’s been sitting in the hose will have the highest levels of chemicals.
  • Avoid the sun: Store your hose in the shade. The heat from the sun can increase the leaching of chemicals from the PVC into the water.
  • Don’t drink water from a hose: Unless you know for sure that your hose is drinking water safe, don’t drink from it. Even low levels of lead may cause health problems.
  • Buy a PVC-free hose: Polyurethane or natural rubber hoses are better choices.

How to Help Ease the Pain of Teething Naturally (And What Products to Avoid)

Part 1: The Dangers of Treating Teething with Medication

When our children aren’t feeling so great, it is our natural instinct as parents to try and make them better. When it comes to teething, some parents are under the belief that giving a child a little dose of Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen is okay. The people behind these products certainly want you to think so, but studies show that these drugs can often cause more harm than good. Links have been found between both Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen to asthma, respiratory disease and decreased lung function in both children and adults. In fact, according to Dr. Palevsky, a respected N.Y. area pediatrician, these medications are not safe for human consumption.

What’s more, “Tylenol/Acetaminophen is toxic to the human body. It causes liver poisoning. The analgesic effects derive from the liver’s attempt to fight the Tylenol by releasing enzymes to break it down. A liver that is not healthy or that is overwhelmed by other toxins, or that has not been sufficiently fueled by food intake, can become overwhelmed and fail, leaving the poison in the body to cause organ damage and death… Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) accounts for 100,000 calls to poison control centers, 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths annually“(Markham).

Along with over the counter pain relievers, medicated teething gels and liquids should also be avoided. Why? Because most of them contain benzocaine, which “is associated with a rare, but serious condition. This condition is called methemoglobinemia and results in the amount of oxygen carried through the blood stream being greatly reduced. In the most severe cases, methemoglobinemia can result in death” (FDA). “Benzocaine gels and liquids are sold OTC under different brand names such as Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, Orabase, and store brands. Benzocaine is also sold in other forms such as lozenges and spray solutions” (FDA).

As painful as teething can be, it is a rite of passage of sorts, that every human, since we came into existence, has had to endure, most without the use of modern medication to numb the pain!

Because we do want our children to be as happy and comfortable as possible while teething, here are some great, natural and safe options.

Part 2: Natural Teething Remedies

Amber Teething Necklaces

Baltic Amber Teething Necklace

How they work: The amber works therapeutically; as it is heated by a child’s body heat, the natural oils from the amber are released and absorbed into the skin. These oils are a natural analgesic (pain reliever) and help to calm a baby in pain.

Amber teething necklaces are made to be worn by babies and toddlers. They are short enough so that the necklace cannot reach the child’s mouth. Most have breakaway clasps and have a knot in between each bead so that if the necklace does break, which it shouldn’t, the beads will not spill all over. Similar necklaces are also available for adults to help relieve pains such as headaches.

What to look for: The most potent beads are ones that are lighter in color and that are raw and unpolished. Some people may be concerned that the unpolished beads will scratch their child; this has not happened with my daughter, as the beads really aren’t that coarse. Make sure that the necklace you purchase has a breakaway clasp and a knot between each bead. Also, make sure that you are buying the amber from a reputable source, as some sellers have recently been found to sell necklaces that aren’t all amber. Instead the necklaces are part amber and part plastic beads. If you are not sure if your amber is real you can perform one or all of these tests to find out: Identifying True Amber (though this link is great for learning how to make sure what you buy is genuine, I did not have a great experience with this seller, unfortunately). I purchased my son’s necklace from The Art of Cure; the quality of the amber they sell is excellent and beautiful. You can find these necklaces here: (the one in the link is a light color in its raw form – exactly the kind you want) The Art of Cure. If you are in Australia you can purchase your necklace from AmbeRocks and if you are in the UK you can get one at Amber Teething Necklaces!

Mommy Teething Necklaces

A Necklace to be worn by Mommy (or Daddy)

These are necklaces meant to be worn by a caregiver, that a child with emerging teeth can use to teethe on. What I like about this is that because an adult wears it around his/her neck, if a baby drops it, it will not land on the floor, and thus, not need to be washed before giving it back to the child.

A product of Smart Mom Jewelry, Teething Bling is the original teething jewelry. Their products are non-toxic, phthalate, BPA, PVC, latex and lead free and all pendants come with a breakaway clasp as an added safety measure.

I really love these necklaces because not only do they look nice on, just like real jewelry, but my necklace kept my daughter happy whether cuddling with me at home or out at a restaurant or at a friend’s house. Here’s where you can purchase yours: Smart Mom Jewelry

Clove Oil

Clove oil has natural numbing properties, and thus, many parents use it on their children’s gums. Because it is warming, the key it to dilute it first before putting it the gums. You can dilute it with olive oil and try it out on yourself first to make sure it’s ok to use on the baby, OR you can buy it already diluted. Companies, such as Soulful Earth Herbals, sell it diluted and mixed with wintergreen for use on babies’ gums. Amazon also sells many different brands.

Mesh Feeders

The Original Mesh Feeder – Sassy and Munchkin also have their own versions

The original mesh feeder was designed by a father looking to ease his child’s teething pain! Since then, other companies have jumped on the bandwagon by creating their own versions. I like the particular feeders pictured here; I have tried others and these are the easiest to open, to close and to wash. These are a great way for a child to teethe on something cold without it being plastic. You freeze a piece of fruit, put it in the teether and let the baby gnaw! The coldness of the piece of food helps to soothe and temporarily numb the baby’s gums.  You can find these in stores selling baby products or on Amazon.

Natursutten BPA-Free Chill-It Teether

41j-ySG6s1L._SX450_I love this company and love this teether; I find it great for when a baby first starts teething. My 10 week old already has his front two teeth visibly coming up and I hold this in his mouth for him while he gums it. It is filled with water instead of any gel-like substance like some cold teethers. It is easy to clean and it is made from non-toxic Eva plastic, contains no bisphenol-a, phthalates, or PVC. You can read more about it here!

Hyland’s Teething Tablets and Teething Gel

Hyland’s Teething Tablets and Teething Gel

Hyland’s provides teething products that are homeopathic. According to Hyland’s, their “homeopathic combination (Calcarea Phosphorica 6X HPUS for teething, dentition; Chamomilla 6X HPUS for irritability; Coffea Cruda 6X HPUS for sleeplessness; Belladonna 12X HPUS (0.0000000000003% Alkaloids)
for redness and inflammation) relieves the restlessness, peevish wining and irritability that accompany infant teething. Their products are free of benzocaine, parabens, and artificial dyes and flavors. I know that my children like Hyland’s tablets, because my son would, and my daughter will, ask for them (by pointing to where I keep them) when their gums were/are in pain. And, I found that my children would sleep better if I put Hyland’s gel on their gums before putting them down to sleep when teething. For more on Hyland’s products, please see their website: Hyland’s

Camilia by Boiron

Camilia is a homeopathic liquid. It comes in tiny, individual packs that you squeeze into the baby’s mouth. The ingredients are as follows: Chamomilla vulgaris 9C HPUS (relieves teething pains accompanied by irritablity), Phytolacca decandra 5C HPUS (relieves painful gums), Rheum officinale 5C HPUS (relieves minor digestive disorder associated with teething) and purified water.

You can buy Camilia online here: Amazon, or you can find out where to buy Camilia in stores, click here: Where to Buy

*I have personally use all of these products with both of my children.

This is a Notice to Inform You…

I wrote this a year ago and am reposting it now because it is so important for people to be aware about the toxins in lawn fertilizers and pesticides – the following two phone conversations that I share here are eye opening. Along with this information, please note that a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute finds that household and garden pesticide use can increase the risk of childhood leukemia as much as seven-fold AND studies show that children living in households where pesticides are used suffer elevated rates of leukemia, brain cancer and soft tissue sarcoma (Beyond Pesticides) – (Click Here for an Important Fact Sheet).

_________________________________________

Last week my parents received this postcard in the mail.

Being that my children play in my parent’s yard quite often, I called the given phone numbers. Truth be told, I would have called no matter what!

I first called the New York State Department of Health Center for Environmental Health and spoke with a friendly chemist named Tom. Here is the gist of the conversation:

Me: Does everyone receive this kind of notice when neighbors are having something applied to their lawn?

Tom: (In regards to NYS) – If you live in a county that has adopted the Neighbor Notification Law and the chemicals being used fall under that law then you will receive notification. (You can view the details of this law here: Department of Environmental Conversation)

Me: These chemicals being used by the companies required to give notification, are they sold in stores for people like me to buy and apply myself?

Tom: Many of them are, yes, like 2,4-D (a type of chemical).

Me: So if my neighbors are applying them themselves I wouldn’t know it?

Tom: No

Me: So in general, what do you recommend to do to take precaution when being applied commercially?

Tom: During application, close all windows, keep children inside, cover lawn furniture and anything else in your yard that you do not want the chemicals getting on. Why don’t you give me the number of the product being applied so that I can look it up?

At this point I gave the number and we found that it DID NOT match the description of what the postcard says is being sprayed, Ortho Weed-B-Gon Pro. Tom assured me that this happens from time to time and that the number given is what was probably being sprayed. He then told me the chemical names of the toxic ingredients, 2,4-D, Mecoprop and Dicamba.

Me: Does the application of these chemicals on my neighbor’s property pose a danger to my family?

Tom: IF applied during the right conditions and IF applied right, according to the instructions, there should not be enough to cause a health effect in humans.

At this point I am thinking that that’s two too many IFs for me! I was also thinking about the typical homeowner applying these chemicals without understanding the importance of following the directions to the ‘T’. For instance, I am related to quite a few people who do not like to read directions. On top of that, there are people who think that more is better, so if the directions say only apply a certain amount, they apply double – thinking that their lawn will be better off, and not thinking about the consequences to the living things that travel on or around the lawn.

Tom (Sensing I was uneasy): IF (there’s that IF again!) done properly, it should be alright. We get a lot of calls about this stuff. Some people would never use these chemicals on their property no matter what. Others want their weeds gone and are comfortable with them being applied.

Me: I would NEVER use them on my property

Tom: Let me tell you about how the toxicity of these chemicals are determined: A bunch of rats are placed in a small space and are exposed to a whole lot of the chemical in a short amount of time. If a lot of rats die it is considered toxic. If only a small amount of rats die, it’s not that toxic.

I really think Tom was trying to make me feel better by telling me this – it only caused me to be more appalled.

Me: Okay, that didn’t make me feel any better.

Tom: I can’t tell you that it’s completely without risk.

At this point I thanked Tom for his time and we hung up.

Once digesting this information, I called the second number, the one for the National Pesticide Telecommunications Network, just to see if they had anything different to say.  I spoke with a man named Colton, who didn’t offer up the information as freely as did Tom. He did let me know that the chemicals being sprayed on the lawn of my parent’s neighbors is of the HIGHEST TOXICITY LEVEL. I asked about how the level is determined and he again told me how it is tested on animals and that the number it is given in regards to toxicity is based on the amount of animals that die. The one question I thought to ask of Colton that I did not ask of Tom was this:

Me: You say that the chemical is dangerous until it is dry. I have children who put things in their mouths. Lets say their ball gets a piece of treated grass on it once it’s dry and it goes into of of their mouths – it’s not dangerous?

Colton: It IS dangerous and you want to try and keep that from happening. When we say it’s not dangerous when dry, it simply means that when you walk on the grass, the chemicals shouldn’t stick to your shoes, only the grass.

So, of course, the piece of grass with chemicals on it could stick to a shoe and enter my house. Great….

Colton then told me he can e mail me the fact sheet on two of the chemicals being used in the formulation being sprayed. He said that because there are thousands of active ingredients that fact sheets haven’t been made for all, so he didn’t have one for the third chemical, but could send me information. I am not including the information on the fact sheets in this post because I already covered a lot of the dangers caused by these chemicals and others like them in this post: The Bad and The Ugly: A Look at Lawn Care Products

I share this information with all of you to raise awareness. These chemicals pose dangers to the health our our families and our pets, even when not used on our own properties. Please think twice before using them and help others to learn about them as well!

On a side note: I am glad that at least there is some kind of law in place when it comes to some applications of pesticides. However, if you notice, this postcard was sent out by a Scotts Lawn Care Service. Scott’s has been in trouble in the past for not revealing important information regarding chemicals in its products. I would think that they would be careful about taking the proper steps so as not to get into any more trouble. That being said, I just don’t know that other landscaping services are following this law and letting people know when they are applying chemicals on a nearby lawn. Let’s face it, there are companies that are run off the books – are they really playing by the rules?

Breast Milk – Is it Still Perfect Even If Your Diet Isn’t?

I read the following comment, and a few others like it, on Facebook yesterday. I wasn’t surprised; In fact, I was expecting it:

“My best friend’s sister in law is/was exclusively breastfeeding her 6 week old. Today she comes over the house and makes a bottle of formula.  She said that she is working on weaning, as suggested by her pediatrician, because she’s not a healthy eater and she misses drinking coffee. He also told her that there isn’t a big difference between formula and breast milk anyway.”

Why was I expecting these types of comments? Because of the statements recently made by the Weston A. Price Foundation regarding breastfeeding, and the perfect diet that a nursing mother should have, says them.

Perfect. Perfect, much like the word natural, is one of those words that has a broad range of interpretations.

Below, copied and pasted directly from their website, is the ‘perfect‘ (and only) diet for a nursing mother to have, according to the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF). *** Please see the bottom of the bottom of the post for the WAPF exact statement.

DIET FOR PREGNANT AND NURSING MOTHERS (for a list of avoids and a warning, click the link)

Cod Liver Oil to supply 20,000 IU vitamin A and 2000 IU vitamin D per day
1 quart (or 32 ounces) whole milk daily, preferably raw and from pasture-fed cows
4 tablespoons butter daily, preferably from pasture-fed cows
2 or more eggs daily, preferably from pastured chickens
Additional egg yolks daily, added to smoothies, salad dressings, scrambled eggs, etc.
3-4 ounces fresh liver, once or twice per week
Fresh seafood, 2-4 times per week, particularly wild salmon, shellfish and fish eggs
Fresh beef or lamb daily, always consumed with the fat
Oily fish or lard daily, for vitamin D
2 tablespoons coconut oil daily, used in cooking or smoothies, etc.
Lacto-fermented condiments and beverages
Bone broths used in soups, stews and sauces
Soaked whole grains
Fresh vegetables and fruits

I understand the importance of the nutrients offered in the WAPF diet and I think that having a set of food suggestions for women to use as a guideline while nursing is a good idea. However, while I believe that a nursing mother should be eating a healthy, well balanced diet, I in no way think that if she isn’t eating according to this ‘perfect’ list, that she should not nurse and instead use formula, more specifically, Weston A. Price’s formula.

One problem with the WAPF coming out and stating that if a mother isn’t eating the perfect diet, then she shouldn’t nurse, IS THIS:  Unfortunately, due to societal influences, there are plenty of mothers who do not nurse simply because it is not convenient for them. Some women do not want to put in the effort, as nursing isn’t always easy. They’d rather sleep at night and have someone give a bottle, or they don’t want to be ‘tied’ to an infant if they have something else that they’d rather be doing.  Because formula is readily available and widely used, these mothers are led to believe that formula is just as, or almost as, good as breast milk. We, as a society, are just coming around to waking people up to see that formula comes no where near offering the nutrients of breast milk and that the reasons so often given by new mothers about why they aren’t nursing, aren’t good reasons at all.

The only part of the WAPF statement that these women are going to ‘hear’ is that they shouldn’t be nursing because they don’t eat a perfectly healthy diet. Most of these women, who weren’t so keen to nurse in the first place, are NOT going to make their own formula using the suggested recipe by WAPF, nor will they spend the money for any formula that may be sold by the foundation. They will go out and buy the mainstream cans of formula that contain chemicals and synthetic ‘nutrients’ – the exact formula that WAPF is saying shouldn’t be used even if a woman’s diet isn’t nutrient dense.

This sentiment, that a mother needs to have a perfect diet to nurse her children, only leaves society with confused and/or misinformed mothers and children who will not get the essential bonding time gotten from nursing, who will not build their maximum lung function, and who will not receive the nutrients that can ONLY be gotten from live mother’s milk.

The fact is that a mother produces the PERFECT milk for her babies, as designed by God or biology, whatever you believe. While I don’t suggest sitting around eating processed foods like Cheetos and soda all day, I do submit to the belief that the normal diet of the typical human offers more than a sufficient amount of nutrients for a baby.

*** ”Our interpretation is the following: the diet of modern American women is so appalling, and their preparation for successful breastfeeding so lacking, that their breast milk provides no better nourishment for their infants than factory-made formula.” – Weston A. Price Foundation

Returning Respect Back to the Breast

My re-sharing of this post comes at a time when the Weston A. Price Foundation is trying to undermine the value and importance of nursing a child. Though I like the Weston A. Price Foundation’s homemade formula recipe for when a mother truly cannot nurse her child, I am AGAINST their recent claims that unless a woman’s diet follows their suggested diet, that she should NOT nurse her child – this is insane! They suggest that unless a mother’s diet is all organic and nutrient dense as outlined by them, that the mother should instead use their formula recipe (maybe they are getting ready to sell their own formula?) Of course a nursing mother should eat as organic and healthy as possible, but to suggest that if her diet does not follow their beliefs of what it should be, that she should not nurse at all – well, that is ludicrous.

__________________________________________________

I have nursed just about everywhere in the thus far total of 42 months that I have nursed my three children, one who was born just 8 weeks ago. I nurse in restaurants, in cars, in friends’ homes, at amusements parks, on park benches, on the beach, on ferries, in stores and in numerous other places that I cannot recall right now. I am the person who just whips out a breast and starts feeding, albeit I do try to be a bit inconspicuous at times. I never thought I’d be as uninhibited as this, but when I had my first born I found that so many people wanted to help me nurse, that my breasts were more exposed than ever before and I didn’t care. I didn’t mind because it was all about feeding my son the best food he could have so that he would thrive, and since then I don’t really care about who thinks what about my nursing in public.

Nursing on the Beach

But, I know people who do mind. People who, at times, are what I call closet nursers. They feel self conscious and assume that people are looking at them and thinking “why here, do that in private,” or “that’s gross.” Perhaps with more support from society, they wouldn’t feel that nursing is something to hide. I actually have a friend who didn’t nurse because she admitted to me that she finds nursing repulsive, and I have heard a person say that nursing is something that should only be done in private.

Yet, the main reason why women have breasts is so that they can provide milk for their children. And I wonder, when did what was once the ONLY way to feed a human child (I am going back to the beginning of the existence of humans here) become a faux pas? It could have a little to do with when men were taught that women’s breasts were sexual objects solely for their pleasure, though I realize it really has a lot more to do with the emergence of formula being introduced. It boggles my mind that formula was once deemed to be better than human milk (can you believe it was actually marketed as being so!?). I am not trying to belittle the idea of formula, as I know that without it there would be babies that couldn’t survive as there are women who legitimately cannot produce enough milk to feed their children for varying reasons. BUT, I do question the companies who make some women believe that formula is almost as good for a child as breast milk and that it’s okay to not try so hard to make nursing work because you can easily pour a product into a bottle and hand the baby off to someone else to feed. Let’s really look at this: chemically processed (I don’t care how you slice it, a canned formula is just that), versus naturally occurring milk containing all the nutrients a baby needs for his/her first year and beyond. Formula doesn’t protect babies from disease and illness as breast milk does. Drinking from a bottle doesn’t increase a child’s lung capacity like nursing for at least four months does. And, as I believe, formula feeding a child through a bottle doesn’t create the same bond between mother and child as does nursing. I am not saying that a mother who doesn’t nurse doesn’t have a great bond with her child, but, let’s face it, a formula fed child is typically not snuggled closely to their mother for the amount of hours a nursing baby is, though there are always exceptions to the rule.

My point? A woman nursing her child is only doing what she knows to be as the best form of food for her child and that should be, at the very least accepted, if not honored. A woman should feel comfortable and confident to nurse her child anywhere and anytime she pleases, just as a mother giving her baby a bottle does.

Wow, I’m actually a bit speechless right now. Thank you to Fooducate for posting about the disgusting truths about some organic produce on Facebook.  You’ve inspired me to write this disgruntled post.

We know that antibiotics are given to non-organic livestock to prevent disease and encourage growth.

But, did you know that organic apples and pears trees are also treated with antibiotics?

Fun and Green(er) Easter Ideas

Somehow Easter became another holiday synonymous with candy and fake food additives, like artificial chocolate bunnies, Peeps, Cadbury eggs, jellybeans, and eggs dyed with artificially derived colors.

I prefer to celebrate the holiday for what it is, a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, but I do indulge my children in the more modern traditions of the holiday as well. Instead of buying into the whole candy aspect and the use of artificial colorings, we take a different spin on things. Following are some candy free and artificial dye free ideas with some DYO money saving tips mixed in!

DECORATING EGGS

I like to eat eggs, just not eggs tainted with the artificial food colorings that are linked to cancers and issues like hypersensitivity and ADHD. These dyes pass through the shell and onto the white of 300my egg, and thus into my body when consumed – not something I find desirable. Two years ago I stumbled upon a great alternative – natural dyes derived from vegetable and fruit sources from eco-kids. The colors are amazing. They are not the typical colors that the artificial dyes produce; these are deeper and more rustic. I always use brown eggs, so the colors really turn out neat on top of the brown. You can purchase these at the eco-kids website, on Amazon, at many Williams-Sonoma stores or if you are a fellow Long Islander, at Healthy Alternatives in Babylon! You can also try your hand at making your own food dyes if you are up to the challenge – here are some recipes: Dyeing Easter Eggs Naturally,  Easter Eggs: Dye ‘Em Naturally so You Can Eat ‘Em Too and from Mommypotamus, Dyeing with Everyday Ingredients.

FOR THE EGG HUNT

If you hide the plastic* eggs and are looking for safe items to stuff them with, here are some ideas. If you are hiding them for a toddler, buy the larger size eggs as they can hold items that take up more space than the candy traditionally hidden in them, and the items that you place in them can be big enough to not pose choking hazards.

* Your egg hunt eggs don’t have to be plastic! Check out these compostable eggs made from cornstarch! ($5.75 for 12 or $11.19 for 28 on Amazon)

1. Coins – my kids love coming into the house after the hunt to put their money in the piggy bank.

2. Stickers work especially well for the younger kids. If you buy sheets that don’t fit into the eggs, you can always cut them down – you can even put one sticker in each egg, making it relatively cheap, while still having something in it that a child will find to be exciting.

3. Plush toys that can squish down. For example, last year we got our daughter something similar to the birds in the photo below and put each of the birds in an egg. We then put the birdhouse in her Easter basket.

4. Finger puppets - Apple Park has some great organic ones, as pictured below.

5. Puzzle pieces – Once the kids find all of the eggs, they’ll have all the pieces to the puzzle. If you are hiding for more than one child, you can color code the eggs.

6. Any toy your child will fancy from pure play kids, an ALL AMERICAN MADE company!

7. If you want to give jellybeans, but don’t want the artificial dyed and flavored ones, try Jelly Belly’s Superfruit Mix! We try not to give the kids much sugar, so we don’t give these ourselves, but it’s what we let the grandparents give as a special treat.

OR

Don’t stuff them at all! Make it a contest with a prize at the end instead of little gifts inside! The prize can even be the Easter basket itself; hide the basket and fill the eggs with puzzle pieces that, once together, give clues as to where the basket is hidden.

THE EASTER BASKET

There are a lot of natural, organic and safe play items that you can fill a basket with. Here are some ideas…

1. eco-kids eco-dough – the natural version of playdough, OR you can make your own playdough and store it in old food containers or jars that you have decorated or covered in fabric or paper. I personally like the eco-dough because it has a nice texture and is free of toxins like artificial colorings.

2. Seed kits to start on a garden. Green Toys sells planting kits with eco friendly pots that are super cute!

3. Any type of organic, and/or eco friendly toys. My favorite ones come from Apple ParkGreen Toys and North Star Toys (no, I am not being paid by these companies, I just love them!). Here are some examples…

Picnic Pals from Apple Park
Green Toys Build a Bouquet
Green Toys Mini Vehicles
Green Toys Tug Boats
Green Toys Mini Race Cars
The Busy Boat by North Star Toys – Great for the Tub!

5. Cozy pajamas! (or any type of clothing that your children need anyway!)

Being Informed Matters

Information Overload. Sometimes people get overwhelmed when exploring the idea of going back to basics and living as organically and naturally as possible. They come to think things like, “I can’t worry about the chemicals in the car seats when I have to worry about so many other things,” “I’m feeding my kids fruit and veggies so it’s okay if they have what everyone else is eating too (re preserved foods packed with dyes and chemicals),” or “toxins in hoses too? Come on.” And guess what? Sometimes I feel the same way. The information is overwhelming. We live in a society so dependent on making things bigger and better that they (the people adding the unnecessary junk into our foods, toys, clothing and every day products) don’t care at what expense it comes. A testament to this is the fact that “Since the passage of the Toxic Substances Control Act in 1976, some 80,000 chemicals have been manufactured and produced in the U.S., the EPA has required testing on 200 for their effects on human health, and only a mere five have been restricted” (HealthyStiff.org).  That’s almost 40 years of chemicals being used in products like artificial air fresheners and laundry detergents that have gone unregulated simply because they aren’t listed in and act passed in 1976.

So why does being informed matter? Because the information is available if you look for it. Because avoiding toxic chemicals on foods, furniture, cars, bedding, etc. does make a difference. Because not being aware can and does seriously injure and kill people. A woman I recently came into contact with, Danielle Barry, wishes she had known about the chemicals in car seats before her son ended up with chemical burns as a baby. A friend of mine wishes she had done her research on vaccines before her son became injured due to just 1 injection. Families of people diagnosed with non-genetic forms of cancer are wishing that they knew about the dangers of pesticides both on the foods they had eaten and on the lawn they once only cared about having look green and lush. It doesn’t help that the media is being fed partial information and that the likes of ‘celebrity’ doctors are paid to say that there is no difference between the nutritional value of organic and conventional food. I am not a scientist and this may very well be, BUT notice how nothing is being said about the dangers of the pesticides used on the conventional foods, such as the 57 different pesticides found on one batch of celery or the 98% of non-organic apples having been contaminated with these chemicals. (Environmental Working Group).

I don’t want to one day be one of those people who get sick down the road and have no idea why (yet their lifestyle and diet path clearly give some clues). I will ‘go to the extreme‘ to keep my family as safe as possible so that they can live a healthy life. I will avoid as much as I can so that the baby thriving inside of me doesn’t have 200 to 300 toxins in his/her cord blood from the likes of things like Teflon, pesticides and flame retardants (Science in the Triangle).

Life is about living, living free from illness and inflammation that slow people down. Of course we are all going to get sick at some point, whether it be a cold, a virus, food poisoning, etc., but those are the illnesses that we are supposed to get; the ones that ultimately make our immune system stronger from having to battle them; the ones that we feed our bodies the nutrients and supplements it needs to fight them quickly and effectively, while avoiding the refined sugars, chemicals and fever reducers that will only hinder our healing process.

Life is about enjoying food, playing, laughing and loving. I am making sure that my family does so for a long, long time, healthily!
